If I were to ask my students (or the parents of my students) why they want to learn piano, by far the most common answer is because they want to learn how to play hymns.  Being a very religious person myself, I have been playing hymns for as long as I can remember.

I put together this tutorial to help you, or anyone, learn how to play this hymn, I Need Thee Every Hour, on the piano one step at a time.

We are going to learn to play this song, line by line.

 

Learn the 1st Line

Step #1:  Learn the first line with your right hand only.

Step #2:  Learn the first line with your left hand only.

Step #3: Learn the first line right hand and left hand together.  Don’t forget the F# in the right hand!

Step #4: Learn the right hand chords.  To make this easier, you can think of them as intervals.  You will notice that the first 7 chords are all 6ths, so when you move your fingers, just keep the same interval in your hand, just moving them up and down according to the music.

 

Step #5: Learn the left hand chords. 

 

Step #6:  Combine both hands together! 

 

Learn the 2nd Line

Step #1:  Learn the second line with your right hand only.

 

Step #2:  Learn the second line with your left hand only.

 

Step #3: Learn the first second right hand and left hand together.  Don’t forget the F# in the right hand!

 

Step #4: Learn the right hand chords.  To make this easier, you can think of them as intervals.

 

 

Step #5: Learn the left hand chords. 

 

Step #6:  Combine both hands together!

 

 

Learn the 3rd Line

Step #1:  Learn the third line with your right hand only.

 

Step #2:  Learn the third line with your left hand only.

 

Step #3: Learn the third line right hand and left hand together.

Step #4: Learn the right hand chords.  To make this easier, you can think of them as intervals.

 

 

Step #5: Learn the left hand chords. 

 

Step #6:  Combine both hands together!

 

Learn the 4th Line

 

Step #1:  Learn the fourth line with your right hand only.

 

Step #2:  Learn the fourth line with your left hand only.

 

Step #3: Learn the fourth line right hand and left hand together.

 

Step #4: Learn the right hand chords.  To make this easier, you can think of them as intervals.

 

Step #5: Learn the left hand chords. 

 

 

Step #6:  Combine both hands together!

Congratulations.  Now you can combine all the lines together to play the whole song of I Need Thee Every Hour!
