A fantastic game for a little more activity and review.  The students learn the note & rest names and values quickly as they try and get as many points as possible.

Level: Beginner – Advanced

Objective: To review note & rest names and values

Materials:

  • Ping Pong balls marked with notes & rests with a permanent marker
  • Bucket or cups to throw into (see above picture)

Players needed: single or multiple players

Game Play:

Set the cups up in a triangle formation (see above picture).  The students can bounce the ball and see if it can land into a cup.  For every one that lands in, they will receive the amount of points that that note or rest is worth!

Or try it this way!

You can put a large bucket and have the students toss into the bucket.  For every one they get in, it is worth the amount of points the note/rest is valued at.

For more of a challenge….

Label the cups as different time signatures: 2/2, 4/8, 6/8, etc.  When the ping pong balls land in the cup, they need to figure out what the note/rest is worth with that time signature!

For this variation, I have them continue to play until all the ping pong balls fall into the cups.  This helps them aim a little more and gives them more practice in working with timing in different time signatures.
